How Chinese numbers work: 5 patterns

Chinese numbers are built like arithmetic: learn ten words and combine them.

  1. 1

    0–10: ten words to learn

    Plus 零 (líng) for zero.

  2. 2

  3. 3

    The tens: unit ×

  4. 4

    21–99: tens + unit

  5. 5

    两 for “two of something”

Counting things, 2 is 两 (liǎng): 两个人, two people. In the number itself it stays

Big numbers in Chinese: hundreds, thousands, a million

100 is 一百, 1,000 一千, 10,000 一万 (yīwàn): Chinese groups by ten thousand, so a million is 一百万 (100 × 10,000). A zero inside a number is said as 零: 一百零一 (101).
