How French numbers work: 5 patterns

Up to 69 French works like most languages. From 70 it counts in twenties.

  1. 1

    0–16 have their own words

    0zéro1un2deux3trois4quatre5cinq6six7sept8huit9neuf10dix11onze12douze13treize14quatorze15quinze16seize

onze, douze, treize, quatorze, quinze, seize are learned by heart like 0–10.

  2. 2

    17–19: dix + unit, with a hyphen

    10 + 7 dix-sept

    dix-sept, dix-huit, dix-neuf: ten-seven, ten-eight, ten-nine.

  3. 3

21–69: ten + hyphen + unit, but et un

20 et 1 vingt et un

21, 31, 41, 51 and 61 take et: vingt et un, trente et un. All the others take a hyphen: vingt-deux, quarante-quatre.

  4. 4

    70–79: 60 + 10 … 19

    60 + 10 soixante-dix

    France has no word for 70: soixante-dix is 60 + 10, soixante et onze 60 + 11, soixante-dix-sept 60 + 17.

  5. 5

    80–99: four twenties

    4 × 20 quatre-vingts

quatre-vingts (80) keeps its s only on its own; quatre-vingt-un (81) has no s and no et. 90–99 add 10–19: quatre-vingt-dix, quatre-vingt-dix-neuf. Belgium and Switzerland say septante (70) and nonante (90).

Big numbers in French: hundreds, thousands, a million

cent and mille take no “un”: 100 = cent, 1,000 = mille. cents keeps its s only at the end (deux cents, but deux cent un), and mille never changes (deux mille). French writes 1 000 with a space and 2,5 with a comma.

French numbers in real sentences

Age uses avoir (“to have”): j'ai trente ans = I am thirty.

More number words: half, a dozen, percent

These 16 words and all 32 numbers from the course are in lessons 7, 20, 21 and 85 of the Flashcardly app.
