How Italian numbers work: 5 patterns

Learn 0–16 and the tens; every other number is built by joining them.

  1. 1

    0–16 have their own words

    0zero1uno2due3tre4quattro5cinque6sei7sette8otto9nove10dieci11undici12dodici13tredici14quattordici15quindici16sedici

11–16 all end in -dici: undici, dodici, tredici, quattordici, quindici, sedici.

  2. 2

    17–19: dici + unit

    10 + 7 diciassette

diciassette, diciotto, diciannove: now the ten comes first.

  3. 3

21–99: ten + unit, one word

    20 + 2 ventidue

ventidue, trentacinque, novantanove: nothing in between, no space.

  4. 4

1 and 8 drop the ten's last vowel

    20 + 8 ventotto

Before uno and otto the ten loses its vowel: ventuno, ventotto, trentuno, trentotto.

  5. 5

    tre gets an accent

    ventitrétrentatréquarantatré

On its own tre has no accent; at the end of a longer number it is stressed and written ventitré, trentatré.

Big numbers in Italian: hundreds, thousands, a million

cento and mille take no “uno”. The plural of mille is -mila: duemila, diecimila. un milione and un miliardo are written as two words. Italian writes 1.000 and 2,5.

Italian numbers in real sentences

Age uses avere (“to have”): ho trent'anni = I am thirty.

More number words: half, a dozen, percent

Questions about Italian numbers

How do you count to 20 in Italian?

zero, uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque, sei, sette, otto, nove, dieci, undici, dodici, tredici, quattordici, quindici, sedici, diciassette, diciotto, diciannove, venti.

How do you say 21 in Italian?

ventuno, one word: venti + uno without the i. 28 works the same way: ventotto.

Why is it ventitré with an accent?

In a longer number the stress falls on the last syllable of tre, so it is written ventitré, trentatré. Alone it stays tre.

How do you say 100 in Italian?

cento. 101 is centouno (also centuno) and 200 duecento.

Is it mille or mila?

mille is 1,000; from 2,000 on it becomes -mila: duemila, diecimila, centomila.
