How Korean numbers work: 5 patterns

The chart above is Sino-Korean, built like arithmetic. The native numbers have their own word for every ten.

  1. 1

    0–10: ten words to learn

    0영1일2이3삼4사5오6육7칠8팔9구10십

Zero is 영 (or 공 in phone numbers).

  2. 2

    11–19: 십 + unit

    10 + 1 십일

십일 sibil, 십오 sibo, 십구 sipgu. 16 is pronounced simnyuk.

  3. 3

    The tens: unit × 십

    2 × 10 이십

이십 isip, 삼십 samsip … 구십 gusip.

  4. 4

    21–99: tens + unit

    20 + 1 이십일

이십일 isibil, 사십오 sasibo, 구십구 gusipgu.

  5. 5

    Which system when?

Sino-Korean: dates, money, phone numbers, minutes, floors. Native: hours (세 시), age (서른 살) and counting things (사과 두 개). Above 99 only Sino-Korean is used.

Big numbers in Korean: hundreds, thousands, a million

백 and 천 take no 일. Korean groups by 10,000: 만 (man) = 10,000, and a million is 백만 (100 × 10,000).

Questions about Korean numbers

Why does Korean have two number systems?

Sino-Korean numbers come from Chinese, native numbers are Korean words. Both are used every day, for different things: dates and money are Sino-Korean, hours, age and counting things are native.

How do you count to 10 in Korean?

Native: 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯, 여섯, 일곱, 여덟, 아홉, 열. Sino-Korean: 일, 이, 삼, 사, 오, 육, 칠, 팔, 구, 십.

Which numbers do you use for age?

Native numbers with 살: 스무 살 (20), 서른 살 (30). In formal writing Sino-Korean with 세 is also used: 이십 세.

How do you say 100 in Korean?

백 (baek), without 일. Native numbers stop at 99, so everything from 100 on is Sino-Korean.
