Good to know

  • No capital letters Spanish days are written in lowercase: lunes, not Lunes, even in a date like el lunes 5 de mayo.
  • “On Monday” is just el lunes Spanish uses no word for “on” here: Te veo el lunes = See you on Monday . Los lunes = on Mondays, every Monday.
  • Monday to Friday don’t change in the plural el martes → los martes. Only sábado and domingo add an -s: los sábados, los domingos.
  • The week starts on Monday in Spain Calendars in Spain start on Monday, and Wednesday is abbreviated X (L M X J V S D) so it doesn’t clash with martes. Many Latin American calendars start on Sunday.
  • Named after the planets lunes = Moon, martes = Mars, miércoles = Mercury, jueves = Jupiter, viernes = Venus. Sábado comes from Sabbath, domingo from Latin dominicus, “the Lord’s day”.
