How Spanish numbers work: 5 patterns

Learn 0–15 and the tens, and every other number up to 99 follows one of these patterns.

  1. 1

    0–15 have their own words

    0cero1uno2dos3tres4cuatro5cinco6seis7siete8ocho9nueve10diez11once12doce13trece14catorce15quince

No pattern here: cero to quince are learned by heart. Note once (11) is not “one-ce”.

  2. 2

16–19: diez y + unit, written as one word

    10 y 6 dieciséis

diez y seis became dieciséis: diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve.

  3. 3

21–29: veinti + unit, one word

    20 y 1 veintiuno

veinte loses its last e and joins the unit: veintidós, veintitrés … veintinueve.

  4. 4

    31–99: ten + y + unit, three words

    40 y 5 cuarenta y cinco

From 31 on, nothing merges. Only the tens are new words: treinta, cuarenta, cincuenta, sesenta, setenta, ochenta, noventa.

  5. 5

    Watch the accents and uno

    dieciséisveintidósveintitrésveintiséis

These four always carry an accent. And before a noun uno becomes un or una: un libro, veintiún años, treinta y una semanas. 100 on its own is cien; with more after it, ciento: ciento uno (101).

Big numbers in Spanish: hundreds, thousands, a million

Irregular hundreds: quinientos (500), setecientos (700), novecientos (900). mil never takes “un” (1,000 = mil). Spanish writes 1.000 or 1 000 for a thousand and 2,5 for two and a half.

Spanish numbers in real sentences

Age uses tener (“to have”): tengo treinta años = I am thirty.

More number words: half, a dozen, percent

These 16 words and all 32 numbers from the course are in lessons 7, 20, 21 and 85 of the Flashcardly app.

Questions about Spanish numbers

How do you count to 20 in Spanish?

cero, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez, once, doce, trece, catorce, quince, dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve, veinte.

How do you say 16 in Spanish?

16 in Spanish is dieciséis, one word with an accent on the é. It comes from diez y seis (ten and six), and 17, 18 and 19 work the same way: diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve.

How do you write 67 in Spanish?

sesenta y siete: the ten (sesenta, 60), then y, then the unit (siete, 7). Every number from 31 to 99 is built this way.

Why is 16 one word but 31 three words?

16–19 and 21–29 merged over time (diez y seis → dieciséis, veinte y uno → veintiuno). From 31 on Spanish keeps the three words apart: treinta y uno.

Is it cien or ciento?

cien for exactly 100 and before nouns (cien euros); ciento when another number follows (ciento veinte, 120).

What is zero in Spanish?

cero, plural ceros. In phone numbers and codes it is said like any other digit: 0 6 = cero seis.
