How Arabic numbers work: 5 patterns

Learn the digits and 0–10; the teens, the tens and the rest are built from them.

  1. 1

    The digits ٠ to ٩ and 0–10

Arabic is written right to left, but numbers are written left to right with these digits: ٢٥ = 25. Many Arab countries also use 0–9.

  2. 2

    11–19: unit +

    أَحَدَ عَشَرَ (11) and اِثْنَا عَشَر (12) are special; then خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ (15) …

  3. 3

    The tens: unit + -ūn

    From 30 each ten is its unit + -ūn: ثَلَاثُونَ (30), أَرْبَعُونَ (40) … تِسْعُونَ (90). 20 is عِشْرُونَ.

  4. 4

  5. 5

    3–10 flip the gender

With a noun, 3–10 take the opposite gender to the noun: ثَلَاثَة كُتُب (three books) but ثَلَاث بَنَات (three girls). The chart shows the counting forms.

Big numbers in Arabic: hundreds, thousands, a million

(1,000,000). This page uses Modern Standard Arabic; spoken dialects shorten many of these.
